Doing It Yourself
A damaged bottom panel looks like a bolt-off job until you're the one holding a 9-foot steel section with no second set of hands. Panels on these newer sectional doors are often foam-filled and glued to the steel skins, so a dent or a crack usually means the whole section, not a patch kit. If you've got the exact model and panel number off the sticker inside the door, ordering it yourself isn't crazy. The part where people get hurt is pulling the old panel off hinged to a spring-loaded door without first locking down the torsion spring. That's the one step we'd ask you not to skip past, even if you do everything else yourself.
Why It Happens Here
Victoria's housing stock runs younger than most of what we see around Savage - a median build year of 2005 against a 1975 median across the 31 areas we cover, where most doors date to the 1960s and '70s. That difference changes the failure mode. Older doors here crack and dent on flat, plain steel skins that almost any supplier still stocks. Victoria's doors are more often steel sectional with embossed panel designs tied to a manufacturer's catalog year, and those catalog lines get discontinued faster than the simple stuff. A rock through a panel, a car backing into the bottom section, a basketball off the garage during a Minnesota winter - the damage is the same kind of damage anywhere in a cold climate, but finding the matching panel is the part that's different here.
What the Repair Takes
Swapping a single panel on a door with hardware still in good shape is usually a half-day job once the part is on hand. The work itself - pulling the hinges, lifting the old section out, setting the new one, re-hanging and balancing the door - doesn't take long. The waiting is almost always for the part, not the labor. If the panel's discontinued and we're matching color and texture instead of matching the exact part number, we'll walk you through what that looks like before we order anything, because an approximate match on a newer door is a lot more visible than it would be on an older one with faded, weathered panels already.
